What Are You Gaining For Lent?

FEB 17, 2020

“But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.” (Philippians 3:7, ESV)

I’ve given up entertainment media for Lent. My purpose is to make space in my schedule, my imagination and my affections for Jesus.

We sometimes focus on what we’re giving up for Lent so much that we forget about what we’re getting. Paul in his letter to the Philippians viewed all his worldly achievements and merits as a poor investment compared to gaining Jesus Christ. He devoted the latter stage of his life to gaining Christ, and sacrificed a great deal to do so.

If there is something I hope you can get out of the season of Lent, it would be to live less for the things and pleasures of this world and live more and more for Jesus Christ and the life he offers. As you do so, I hope you will experience a better life, a greater joy, and greater freedom to be who God created you to be and to do what he created you to do.

So, are you giving up anything for Lent? More importantly, do you know what you’re getting?

Living in the hope of Easter,

Steve
